Suggestions for Arduino with CDMA cell phone?

I am developing an application for monitoring temperatures at a remote location with SMS support. I started with the GM862 and a pay as you go SMS plan on a new SIM card but the GSM provider in my area (Southern Manitoba, Canada) is Rogers and their network coverage here sucks. MTS Mobility is the other option and they run a CDMA network. After many hours researching online I have found that there are very few CDMA modules (and they need to be verified by the service provider $$$$) and CDMA modems are pricey.

Now, I can nicely send/receive SMS with my Motorola K1m (CDMA phone with MTS) from Hyperterminal with the usb connection and standard AT commands. So I need a CDMA phone that supports AT commands and has a serial RS232/TTL connection. Any ideas?

From what I can gather, there are some Kyocera phones (2035, 2325, 3035) that have a rs232 data cable option and I believe they support AT commands. That's the only option I have figured out yet.

I would like to hear suggestions for CDMA phones with rs232 connections.

Thanks.

I bought one of these, they seem well priced but I havent got round to using it yet.

I wish to do the same thing as Matt.

I would like to monitor in a remote location in Wisconsin. However, the only network there is US cellular or Verizon which are CDMA

are there any new options out there? Have any CDMA vendor started to use SIM cards?

mk3, so far I have not found a good CDMA solution to this problem. In my area the CDMA provider is switching to a GSM system and the existing GSM provider is improving their service so I just kept developing my Arduino/GM862-gps project.

you are lucky!

in the US we are stuck with ATT (GSM) but bad network
or
Verizon (CDMA) excellent network but no SIM cards

My only other idea is to ask some close by neighbors of the project if they will rent a wifi connection to me... but that's far from ideal
