unable to make connection with 2 Xbees + Arduino Wireless shield + arduino UNO

hello,

I am trying to set up a connection between 2 Xbees. I use an Arduino UNO with the arduino wireless SD shield(Shields — Arduino Official Store) and an Xbee series 1.

there is no connection between the 2 Xbees and I am also unable to connect it to X-CTU (i have tried to do this with the Xbee attached to the Arduino + shield, no Xbee explorer was used).

Does it make a difference if I would use an Arduino mega instead of the UNO?
Any links to examples or an explanation about the connection between the Xbees would appreciated.

How many XBees do you actually have?

How have you configured the XBees? digi's crap about communicating out of the box is malarkey.

Spend the money to get a USB Explorer. Eliminate at least one point of failure.

i have 2 Xbees (S1), one on each Arduino Uno (with a wireless shield).

The reason i haven't configured them is because the USB explorer was lost. a new one has been ordered so that problem should be eliminated.

The reason I asked this question is because there are many internet tutorials where they did not speak about configuring them with the USB explorer. after some testing i came to the conclusion I probably needed a USB explorer. But because it's my first time using an Xbee I wasn't sure if it was the Xbee or just me that couldn't use it properly.
