Upload fails: "programmer is not responding"

Kind of a newbe here so if I missed the resolution to this issue please explain. I'm getting this error where before, using the same cable and port, there was no problem. Here is the error message

Hi @drewarduino2468. Please add a reply here on this forum topic to tell us which Arduino board you have connected to your computer.

Please be as specific as possible, as some Arduino boards with similar names have significant differences and the forum helpers can only provide effective assistance if we are aware of which one is being used. I see you have Arduino IDE configured for use with an "Arduino UNO":

If you aren't sure which one you have, you can provide a picture of the board or a link to the place you bought it from and we'll see if we can identify it.

If you aren't sure how to describe which board you are using, you can provide the link to the online product listing you bought the board from and we'll proceed based on the information found there.

For the Uno R3 (that you have selected as the board)

  • Is anything connected to the board? Disconnect it and try again
  • Anything connect to pins 0 and 1 can interfere with the upload process.
  • Does this happen with any sketch? Empty sketch, blink, your sketch.

ptillisch thank you for your reply. I'm using an Arduino UNO R3. I have three of these and each shows the same error message. I tried with an Arduino NANO (ATmega 328p V3) and got the same results.

Hello sterretje. Thank you for responding. Nothing is connected to the board except the usb cable I've used before. Nothing on pins 0 and 1. I have also been unsuccessful with the canned blink sketch. Same error message on three UNO's (R3) and a NANO (ATmega328p V3

Is your previous program continuously printing to the Serial Monitor?

A few things to check:

  • Have you selected the correct UNO under the Tools menu?
  • Have you tried a different known-good USB cable?
  • What version of the Arduino IDE are you using?
  • Do you have more than one Arduino IDE window open?

I have seen this happen when the Serial Monitor is already open in another IDE window using the same COM port.

When in doubt, disconnect power, close the IDE, restart it, and upload a simple test sketch to verify that everything is working before going back to your original program.

for see if problem is with the port you ca try first to load a blink, if at blink give same error try to connect with a serial terminal like serialterminal.com ,if can connect need to concentred a baudrate,ecc

Remove and re-install FastLED library. The above line and the file Initials.ino looks suspect. Compile twice (first compile will be slow and will do the caching).

Also... here's a minimal sketch to try (a "blink" using FastLED)... verify the DATA pin for your project...

// Arduino Nano/Uno with one WS2812

#include <FastLED.h>                // https://github.com/FastLED/FastLED
#define PIX 1                       // number of WS2812
#define PIN 6                       // data pin

CRGB led[PIX]; // Create FastLED object (led[])

int maximum = 255; // adjust maximum brightness
bool toggle; // a bit to toggle
unsigned long timer, timeout = 500; // timer

void setup() {
  FastLED.addLeds<WS2812, PIN, GRB>(led, PIX); // initialize object
  FastLED.clear();                             // clear buffer
  FastLED.setBrightness(maximum);              // set brightness
  FastLED.show();                              // display buffer
}

void loop() {
  if (millis() - timer >= timeout) {
    timer = millis(); // reset timing
    led[0] = CRGB(0, 0, 255 * toggle); // send color to buffer
    FastLED.show();                    // show buffer
    FastLED.clear();                   // clear buffer
    toggle = !toggle;                  // toggle on/off multiplier
  }
}

Did your boards ever work?

The Nano V3 might not be a real Nano (or not even a "real" clone) but something a board with a LGT8F328P.

Hi sterretje. I don't want to go down a different rabbit hole here chasing a NANO. I tested the NANO only to see if I got the same problem as the three UNO's, and I did. All of these boards worked before on this exact sketch. I'm using IDE 2.3.10.

Are those boards originals or clones with CH340? If the latter, maybe it's a driver issue; maybe the instructions in UNO stopped working after having worked for years - #24 by ptillisch will sort the problem out.

sterretje thank you for sticking with me on this problem. Two UNO's are originals from Arduino (photo attached). One of the UNO's and the NANO are from ELEGOO. Again I have run many projects with these boards with no problems (other than self-inflicted :zany_face: ).

Tried following the instructions in #24 by ptillisch. Got to section 18.3 and had to stop due to instruction "
:red_exclamation_mark: It is possible you will instead see the message "The best drivers are already installed". If so, please stop following the instructions here and reply on this forum topic to let us know. I'll provide alternative instructions you can follow." I'm not sure this applies to my original UNO boards but it made me aware that USB ports may be the issue. I am starting to think this is a computer problem. Here is what my Windows Device Manager looks like. I tried to 'Update Driver' but it says the best one is installed. It shows a COM3 assignment for the Arduino and a Bluetooth Link. Could that be a conflict?

Verify the above baud with the Device Manager >> LPT&COM >> UNO >> Properties >> Bits per second... here is mine... at 9600... I have never used Avrdude or Avrdudess.

xfpd thanks for the reply. In Device Manager Arduino COM Port 3 is set at 115200. I have never seen Avrdude or Avrdudess before this error code came up.

Hello everyone. I believe I've solved the problem. As shown in an earlier post in this thread I had two different devices assigned to COM Port 3. I reassigned the non Arduino device to another port under Properties-Port Settings-Advanced, reloaded the sketch and --- success!!!

Thank you to everyone that chimed in on this and got me to the correct resolution.

So you don't use AVR based boards (like Uno or Nano or ...)? Just asking because AVRdude is the tool used by the IDE to perform the upload for those boards.

Windows uses that when you use the command line to communicate with a serial port. Applications can happily use their own settings.

And I don't program in C++, ever... ( :

That was a system value.
