Upload to Nano fails: "avrdude: stk500_getsync() attempt 1 of 10: not in sync"

I am having issues uploading the Blink Example code to just test the board and connectivity. I have checked blogs and confirmed the proper com port is being used and nothing connected to the pins. Here is the error codes and log. The Arduino Nano is connected to a Win 11 computer via USB and the red LED is illuminated. What am I missing?

Sketch uses 924 bytes (3%) of program storage space. Maximum is 30720 bytes.
Global variables use 9 bytes (0%) of dynamic memory, leaving 2039 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2048 bytes.

Hi @tyjoh25. You described the Arduino board you are uploading to as "Nano". Something that can be confusing is there are multiple boards with "Nano" in their name. We need to be certain of exactly which one you have. The reason is that the problem might be caused by the IDE not being correctly configured for your specific board.

Please tell us which of the following boards you are attempting to upload to:

If you aren't sure which one you have, you can provide a picture of the board or a link to the place you bought it from and we'll see if we can identify it.

If you're indeed using a classic Nano, the above indicates that you have selected the 328P option under tools / processor in the IDE. Try the other options; "old bootloader" is the most likely one to work if you bought a clone.

Adding to below, there are a few more clone boards that are sold as "Nano"

  • boards with 168
  • boards with LGT8F328P

As requested, a clear photo that shows the markings on the processor would in that case help us to identify.

I guess that the ones I mentioned fall under "other"
