My question is, how fine does usb over ethernet work?
For a project I want to have serial data from my Macbook to my arduino uno with a range of 20 - 100 meter between the two. I know usb extenders work fine, but these go until 25 - 30 meter max.
I've seen some USB extenders over cat5 like this.
Someone has experience with some of those extenders?
I also found out that some extenders work with an external program, that is something I want to avoid.
I just want to plug and program my arduino from 50 meters and even 100 meter if that is possible.
A lot of protocols that work with cat 5/cat 6 cable can send data and power over ethernet until 100 meter so this should be possible no?
Its very dependant on the USB devices that you want to connect.
USB 2 really needs gigabit ethernet to be reliable, but if the devices are slow speed then 100
mbs usually works.
It wont work well with things like webcams or usb hard drives , but slow speed serial should be OK.
Ideally speaking, yes it does work. Some people keep their workstations in separate rooms of house (or office) and just have the extension run to their desk. This way the mouse, keyboard, and accessories run over USB-ethernet back to the machine, in a temperature controlled clean room.
If the cabling is done correctly there is not a problem. This means avoiding laying un-shielded cable across florescent ballasts and that type of thing. If you have a question about it, just lay out 100ft (or however long you want) ethernet cable in the same room and test your hardware. This way you know if it works before you bury the cable in your walls (if your doing that).
I usually try find youTube video review on devices like this stuff, to see if anyone else has proven if whatever I want to buy does work, or if there are problems. A name brand device like "tripp-lite" has a reputation to protect and they lay out their specifications - unlike non-name brand china stuff which can be anyone's guess.

That's what I have, except for the part about temperature controlled and clean. I ended up using an active USB extender cable after the USB over Ethernet cable thing didn't work. But I don't have the need for such range as woutclarysse.

My monitor occasionally turns off for a second when the refrigerator compressor starts.
