using bluetooth to set up beacon

hey~! i am newbie in arduino.
I have seen people setting up beacon with arduino.
but if it is possible to use the beacons to collect data?
i want to set up beacons for my pets. so, once my pets get into the extent of the beacons, the beacons will collect my pet's name or other information.
is it possible to do that?
i searched a lot about beacons that mention beacons only emit data, they can't collect.
if it is possible, please let me know the tutorials. thanks.

I believe that is true, which I guess means that the pet carries the beacon.
