WTV020-SD-mini - No sound

Hi Guys,

I've just purchased a WTV020-SD-mini along with a 1gb micr SD memory card and am trying to get it setup and running, primarily just as the basic push button player so that I can test it works however I'm struggling to even that get running.

I've wired it as per the datasheet as found here MP3 mode circuit- WTV020SD-16P Tutorial - BuildCircuit.COM (speakers connected directly, with an LED and just jumper wires to trigger the shorts), and have made sure the sd card is FAT16 formatted and am using some sample ad4 files from the above tutorial so those should all be in the correct format.

The issue I have got is when I tell the module to play, the LED goes out for like 1.5 seconds and then comes back on and nothing plays (I can hear the speakers do something really faint, but it isn't an audible sound). Pressing the next switch just causes the same effect, always a 1.5 second off period for the LED and nothing plays.

I've tried it with 3.3.v output from an Arduino, 3v ouput from 2xAA batteries, 4.5v output from 3xAA batteries and 3.7v output from a lipo battery but nothing seems to work.

The only thing I can possibly think it could be is the micro sd card but this reads/writes fine on the pc so can't see why it would be. As I say, it's 1gb as recommended by the manufacturer (though I have seen others say it HAS to be 2gb).

Can anyone offer any advice on how I can get this working? or what I might be doing wrong?

Here's a picture of my breadboard incase it helps:

Some more info, after listening very closely the speaker does actually make a beep sound when the LED goes out. Could it be the SD card is not compatible? it was just a 1gb sd card I purchased on ebay. Does it need to be a specific kind?

Another update.

I went ahead and purchased another memory card (Sandisk 2gb), formated as FAT and installed the demo audio files on and I'm still getting nothing but a couple of beeps (a long low beep followed by a quick higher pitched beep).

Anybody got any other suggestions. I seem to have tried pretty much everything I can find a reference to online so am pretty much stumped :frowning:

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Matt

What audio format are you using WAV or AD4?
