Then why a Mega without WiFi.
An ESP32 based board could be a better choise.

Hi Again, I chose the mega because of the amount of pins. I have been struggling to find the Mega with WiFi in SA. I should probably look again since I purchased the boards when I knew a lot less than now. I also have to consider cost, the quilt is for rural mom's and toddlers in SA. I want them to be able to produce their own if they needed to . I have a wemos and a small esp board. Which ESP would you recommend? Any advice and tips are incredibly welcome
I mentioned ESP32 because they have more available pins than an ESP8266 based board.
But they use 3.3volt logic, which some sensors might not like.
You can add an ESP-01 to your Mega. A kludge, like the WiFi Mega, which sort-off works.
Seems you need to do a lot of experimenting before you commit.
