Zumo Reflectance Sensor Array without Zumo Shield

Hello,

First of all, I'm totally noob on Arduino.
I have a project of building a mini sumo robot, so one of the sensor I need is an ir reflectance array. I've bought, without firs make a research (bad), a Zumo Reflectance Sensor Array (https://www.pololu.com/product/1419) for border detecting. I haven't received it yet but I'm seeng on the Internet that all related to this sensor comes with the Zumo Shield. No examples without it.
My question is, do I really need the Zumo Shield to use this sensor? Or it is possible to connect it to my Arduino UNO.

Can be used without an additional 'shield'. Connect with dupont cables (or solder)
