Hey, does anyone have experience using any 3G or 4G network modules? I want to future proof my design but there's not much information available on the few 3G or 4G options out there. Has anyone had a go at using these yet? How much success did you have and what modules did you use?
There are very few 'ready to plug in' 3G options out there to suit casual embedded solutions - and all are pricey because of Qualcomm's hold on the 3G licensing.
The physical modem modules are available, but require high-density connectors and antenna pad layout etc for best operation. If you're laying out a surface mount product with volume production, no big deal, but low-volume, or through hole support is virtually non-existent.
Even fewer (if any) 4G embedded models, but they will eventually be cheaper than 3G with luck, as the 4G licensing belongs to a wider consortium.
I'm getting some cost-competitive modules manufactured with either SIMCOM 5320, or TELIT 3G modules on 0.1 headers - which support 5V tolerant I/O...
Once they're available - I'll post a link so you guys can communicate directly with the manufacturers.
The modem/spectrum/band assignments are a dog's breakfast - so make sure to check your region and the exact modem capabilities before you order.
Cheers
