Ive been looking into building my first robot using Arduino for a while now. Definitely want to start off simple. Just looking at an autonomous bot that free roams. I have an idea on the IR sensors, but can someone explain the other hardware? Mainly things like the shield I would need, possibly refering me in the right direction as to hooking the shield up properly to the Arduino Uno, etc.

If you can solder, forget about shields and look up the L293E motor driver chip.
