Anyone got any advice regarding using LDRs with laser pointers, for example, translucent materials, and how much is needed?

I am trying to get into the habit of using more baseline components like the, old faithful, 555. IR LEDS, and receivers, seems good options to experiment with 555s.

Did that with a beambreak setup that does 50m in broad daylight, no lenses.
Good ol' (smd) 555 to generate 38KHz for the LED driver and a 3-pin receiver with Arduino.
