I uploaded the Blink sketch and it runs until the display is connected. The giga r1 also disappears from device manager.
Make sure you plugged the display correctly, that is on the correct side of GIGA.

Hi, are you plugging in the display while the GIGA is running?
Oh!!! I'm bad. I mean, eyes R bad. Okay, I squinted and saw the holes in the circuit board through which the giga displays pins pass. Problem resolved and without spewing a ton of $moke too.
