Arduino micro power supply

I plan to use an arduino micro to control the 12v fan in my PC case by monitoring the temperature. I will use a mosfet to control the the fan, and use the PCs ATX power supply to drive the fan/arduino.

I'm a little confused around the power supply requirements for the arduino, as I believe the arduino can be powered from 7v-20v, yet also can be powered by USB. Preference from what I've seen is not to exceed 12v.

As I have 12v & 5v available from the ATX, I'm in doubt as to whether to use the 12v supply (which could exceed 12v) or the 5v - not sure how this would be connected or if it would be enough?

Use the 5V put into the 5V pin of an Uno development board.

The 7 to 12V is ran to a regulator on an Uno to bring it down to 5V. USB is 5V and is directly used to power the uno instead of being converted to 5V by the regulator.

Excellent, thanks for your help.
I will try using the 5v supply.

Hi,
Do you want to just turn the fan ON and OFF or want to vary its speed?
