If I use a 5v and 1.5A supply to power up the arduino UNO/Mega using the usb port, will the arduino work fine without blowing anything up? I know that the usb port is for 5v supply but I am not sure about the maximum safe current that could be supplied through it
Current doesn't quite work that way. The Arduino will take as much as it needs; it draws current from the supply.
The 1.5 Amp supply will be more than able to provide what your Arduino wants to take.
