arduino vibration sensors

Hi, I'm looking at a project to sense the frequency and the amplitude of vibrations on a running machine. I want to be able to tell if it is running or not by vibrations, and compare the vibration level in use to vibration level at idle.

Anybody have a solution to that? I've tried using piezo sensors, but don't really get enough info, can't figure how to measure vibration amplitude with one, I can only sense a sudden change, not an ongoing vibration.

Haven't tried it myself, but look here Piezo Vibration Sensor - Small Vertical - SEN-09199 - SparkFun Electronics especially the comments.

Do your machines have on-board computers?

Tux,
Thanks, I've got one of those hooked up now, but it will sense a knock, or a decent deflection, but not vibration. For example I can't get it to respond to bass on my subwoofer, feel the shake of my blender, or tablesaw.

kcarp,
no, the uses I'm thinking are on dumb machines. Think table saw, other workshop machinery.
