avrdude: Yikes! Invalid device signature.

I think the nothing sketch - has nothing to do with it - and makes no sense.
Probably loose wiring.

Also proper Resistors are needed with the XTAL connected.

I solved mine following an alternate post:

" I had exactly this problem. If the atTiny is set for external clock, then the ArduinoISP will not be able to program it without an external crystal. Connected a 16MHz crystal and 2 capacitors and worked perfectly. "

Smooth running after fixing these.

I had 2 problems:

  1. Lousy chinese seller off eby , mixed 225 caps with the 220 cap - so my XTAL was not working
  2. The Chinese Eby Breadboard had broken Power strips that needed jumpers to make continuous.
