I want to purchase a chromebook to use the Arduino IDE cloud for personal (not educational use) using the Google app software ( not with linux). My research indicates that there has been a history of problems with this software on Chromebooks.
Before I commit to purchasing a Chromebook can you advise if the cloud IDE is working & useable in 2024 with chromebooks
To avoid confusion, I only see the name Arduino IDE refer to the native installed IDE; the old 1.x version and the current 2.x. For that it was sort of "flip of the coin" depending on the board type, but recently got worse. I wouldn't recommend it.
The Cloud Editor requires installing the Create Agent. On Chromebook, only certain Arduino boards are supported, much fewer than with Windows, MacOS or Linux. I have no experience with it. Maybe someone else has.
I've actually seen a few online reports to the effect that the 'Create Agent' software doesn't work & that its developer has gone missing.
A user has also reported that the cloud of his Chromebook doesn't recognize his Uno r3 board. This is probably because the cloud software will not accept clone boards, of which there are many.
Even the Amtel Mega 16 U2 genuine chip can appear on counterfeit boards.
For identification purposes the PTC fuse smd should be a custom golden-black, with “501K” or similar printed on it, or the Arduino infinity symbol on newer boards. On a counterfeit, it may be a generic component, with a green color & marked 5W5 or otherwise .
The bottom line is that buying a cheaper Chromebook for this purpose will be an expensive mistake.
