Comm over power lines

I'd like some concrete ideas on how to design a HA system that communicates over the power lines.
Things that are hooked up to 110V 60Hz do not sense interference of lower frequencies. That is what I think this digitalStrom is doing. Though there could be some limitations, such as interference from high impedance appliances (motors, dryers, etc).

Do a Google search for X10. Been around for years.

ah, didnt know that x10 was doing that... makes sense now
but haven't someone reverse engineered that?
I wanted to drive it with arduino and wanted to diy it.

any other sugestions?
