Connecting stepper motors (3d printing board)

This is about electronics, on how to connect stepper motors.
I got a AIO2 board as a replacement part for a broken other board.
This board controls X Y, Z and extruder stepper motors, per motor 4 wires available.
It was a homebrew printer I bought, and .. with the new AIO2 board replacement
The stepper motors move hectic (like they doubt sometimes in direction at slow speeds)

The problem comes down I think to the wiring of the stepper motor.
magnetic field orientation depends on the wire connected.
So if the right wire is connected, still the current flow might need to be reversed.
plus to min and vis versa.
Is there a way to check out which wire I should connect?

How would you determine this if the whitepapers on the electronics are not detailed enough?
Say if you had to do it without such papers how would you solve such a problem?

If it is a wiring problem, you may need to describe how it is connected.
If the control signal is determined to be OK, then it may be affected by electromagnetic interference causing a misjudgment of the direction of operation.
