I am currently working in an ecology laboratory for an internship. My topic is to link cat personality to predation behavior. To do so, I would like to use a combined GPS & Camera device to put on a simple cat collar. I do not find this kind of device on the internet so I was wondering if it's possible to build one as a beginner ? I really have no idea of which components I need.
It seems there are GPS collars, and camera collars, but no camera + GPS collars I could find. If the camera timestamps videos, I guess you could tie up with timestamps from a GPS tracker.
I think creating a combined camera & GPS collar could be a tricky job for a beginner, interesting project though.
Keep in mind that the GPS units common in the hobby world are RECEIVERS only. You would need to add a transmitter of some sort depending on range. Lora is the longest range, but slow data rate.
Due to size and weight not a practical project for a house cat.
Indeed, it's a hard project as I need something small and light but with a great battery... I will check the SEEED ESP32S3 Sense board and see what I can do with that ! Thank you.
That XIAO board is OK, but unfortunately due to a design issue you cannot sleep the supplied OV2640 camera, well you can sleep it but current consumption is 100mA or so.
If you swap the camera for an OV3660 or OV5640 you can get sleep current down to circa 2mA, but as a general rule ESP32S3 type boards are not battry friendly and can use a fair bit of current when running.
If a small light, long battery life camera\tracker was practicable, you would imagine it would be readily available, being as how useful it would be for all sorts of applications.
