Im currently using nrf24 modules and wanted to experiment with zigbee/xbee for their native mesh capability.
However, the modules seem expensive in comparison to xbee or even bluetooth. Im struggling to see why, given that i keep chinese zigbee enabled devices at very low price points.
Zigbee is a mesh protocol that runs on hardware from a number of manufacturers. You can find cheap modules on Aliexpress. I have no idea if these are any good, or even if they have documentation in English or Chinese.
Xbee is a brand name for a diverse range of radio hardware made by one company (Digi).
Some Xbee devices support the Zigbee protocol.
I would suspect that the only way to get a cheap price is by buying in bulk.
I am not aware of any Xbee clones.
Occasionally you see slightly cheaper used devices on Ebay sold as "untested". Presumably these are extracted from decommissioned gear removed from buildings.
