I am designing a new part (ATtiny2313 DIP-20 package) in eagle, following this tutorial.
In the second part of the tutorial (designing the footprint) the package's pin names show up. However, my pin names don't show up, they are just empty (attached). Any ideas?

Maybe your pads don't have any names. I fiddled with a test lib a bit and couldn't turn off the display of pad names except if I just erase their names in property dialog. Hope it helps.
If I open up the properties, it says P$1, P$2 ... P$20, but I can't see them!!!! All layers are turned on, and I changed the bg to white, no black text either.
I think you'll find those are the "internal" names of the pins
usual trick is to add some text near the pins
try the T button, just make sure you then select which layer the text appears on
I don't think you can display the names of the pads in the package window. That tutorial is an older version of Eagle (4.15) and they may have changed that option in the newer versions.
