Electromagnet

Hi! I am making a crane to attract iron objects to the crane's lifting thingy which is an electromagnet.

1.Can I short pins 11 and 12 writing pins 12 as HIGH and 11 as LOW?
2.Would the voltage and current be sufficient for this task?
3.Is it safe for my Arduino Mega ADK (Especially the Atmega 2560 and my digital pins)?

No.

You need external components to control an electromagnet.

Well given that you can get 40mA from an Arduino, that is 0.04A and a typical lifting magnet might take 40A or more then the Arduino is three orders of magnitude too weak.

No. You must limit the current out of any pin to less than 40 mA, or the Arduino will break. So use a relay for the electromagnet if you want to lift anything heavier than iron filings. Look up "arduino relay circuit" and have the relay power the electro magnet.
