Hi everyone, I represent HONGTE, an electronic-component supplier in Shenzhen. We list the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R8, and I wanted to share a few checks for anyone choosing it for a custom board or Arduino-based project.
The important detail is the memory combination: 16 MB of Quad-SPI Flash and 8 MB of Octal-SPI PSRAM. These serve different purposes; they do not add up to "24 MB RAM." Flash holds firmware and data, while PSRAM is volatile working memory.
Before ordering or configuring a project:
- Check the complete N16R8 marking. Other ESP32-S3-WROOM variants have different memory configurations.
- Match the Arduino-ESP32 settings. Select the correct board definition. Where the options are exposed, match the 16 MB Flash size and OPI PSRAM setting to this module. Octal PSRAM does not mean Octal Flash.
- Check the partition scheme against your application, filesystem and OTA requirements. Physical Flash capacity is not the same as the space allocated to one sketch.
- Allow space for the antenna. WROOM-1 uses a PCB antenna. Plan its antenna clearance using the module datasheet.
- Plan the carrier board. This is a surface-mount module, rather than a USB development board. A carrier must provide the required 3.0–3.6 V supply, programming connections and boot/reset circuitry.
