ESP32-Wroom-32E with Li-ion Battery

Hi every body,

I am using ESP32-wroom-32E module and I need it to power it with 18650 Li-Ion battery. It should work like this,

  • When there is power input, it should power from power input and charge battery
  • if battery is fully charged, it should cut-off battery charging.
  • if there is no power input, it should supply from battery.

I am planning to use 18650 Li-ion barttery in parallel to increase the current capacity. I will use 18650 Li-ion with capacity of 2000mAh and 3 or 4 in parallel to get 6000mAh - 8000 mAh.

Any suggestion or reference design will be helpful.

Thanks.
Best Regards.

Have you looked at battery management IC's? The data sheets would have reference designs.

There are a few ways to achieve the power management you described with the ESP32-WROOM-32E module and a 18650 Li-Ion battery. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Use a power management module: You can use a pre-built power management module that is designed to work with a 18650 Li-Ion battery and has the necessary charging and cut-off features. There are many options available online, such as the TP4056 charging module or the MT3608 boost converter module. You can connect the power management module to the input power source and the battery, and then connect the output to the ESP32 module.
  2. Build your own power management circuit: If you have experience in electronics, you can design your own power management circuit using components such as a battery protection IC, a charging IC, and a boost converter IC. You can find reference designs online or in electronics books. This option requires more effort and knowledge but gives you more control over the power management.
  3. Use the ESP32's built-in power management features: The ESP32-WROOM-32E module has built-in power management features that allow it to operate from a battery while also charging the battery. You can connect the battery to the VBAT pin and the input power source to the VIN pin. The ESP32 will automatically switch between the power sources based on availability and charge the battery when input power is available. You can configure the battery charging current and cut-off voltage using software.

Regardless of the approach you choose, make sure to use a battery protection circuit or module to prevent overcharging, over-discharging, and short circuits. Also, be aware of the voltage and current requirements of the ESP32 module and choose components that can handle them.

I checked the datasheet and there is no information about power management with battery.

For the first option, If I use TP4056 or MCP73831 Single cell li-ion charger, Is it possible to connect batteries in parallel.
