Get real time tire pressure of a bike

Hi everyone !

I'm actually working on a full "electronics" bike, and I would like to have a real time pressure check of both tires. So I've searched but the problem is that I don't think I could put an sensor inside the tire cause I don't think I have enough place for this in the tire and sometimes I get very hard with my bike and if there was an electronic component inside, it will just break in many pieces.

So I had an idea, to put an sort of electrovanne that's check the pression in real time (No need wireless communication so just a simple sensor) directly on the valve stem, and don't let the air get out.
I've found someone having a similar idea but actually the topic is just abandonned...

I made a little sketch so you can see what I would like to do :

So any ideas that you could have is welcome

Best regards,
Jules

Garmin do some TPMS sensors that just replace the valve caps, for use with their Zumo motorcycle GPS units. Google 'GARMIN TMPS' and you'll find them; they go for about £50/pair on eBay. I doubt if you could make something small, robust and wireless for less than that from components.

You could always try and hack the Garmin sensors to work with an Arduino.

Your plan for wired sensors would be fine for maybe 10-15 metres, until the wires wrapped round the axle and broke.

Hi Andym535 ! And thanks for your quick reply

I didn't know about TMPS, it looks good, once I will have installed the most important things for my bike I will buy them, and I think I will open a topic in the Hacking Forum for controlling it (If I don't know how to)

Also I think your right about the wired plan, it will have a very high cost in wires per kilometers xD

Thanks you again,
Jules
