Good way to connect to calculator LCD?

Hi folks!

I'm using LCD's salvaged from old calculators (7 segment displays). Problem is, it's extremely difficult to make reliable connections. The zebra-striped ribbon cables, such as in this pictuce:

are impossible to connect to. What I've had to do is carefully solder to the original PCB while trying desperately hard to not rip off the ribbon cable or worse, melt it. I've ruined quite a few so far.

Anyone have any (reasonably inexpensive) methods of connecting my Arduino's pins to these calculator LCDs?

Thanks

What's the point?

What makes you think you can drive the LCD from an Arduino anyway?

Do you know how to drive LCDs?

Yes I know how to directly drive an LCD.
