Hacking TENS unit

Hey folks!

I am trying to bypass some power/intensity knobs on the controller board of a TENS unit. My goal is to control the TENS unit with an Arduino so I can code my own “programs” so to speak, but these knobs are not quite like the potentiometers that I have seen before. They click into the “off” position and they have 5 pins on the board. Does anyone know how I can circumvent them?

A TENS unit is typically powered off a 9 volt battery. It isn't going to hurt anybody who's approved to use one.

You might have better luck building your own unit.
Not a big Instructables fan, but here:

2 of the pins will be the physical power switch, the remaining 3 will be a simple pot. Do I dare ask what your plans are?
