It may be worth checking whether you actually have an ILI9341; from the symptoms you describe, you may have an ST7789 controller.

A read through of this topic from a couple of years ago may be enlightening.

Since you are getting "read" values, I assume that you are using proper 3.3V GPIO e.g. Zero, Due, Teensy4.0, ... I suspect that you have an ST7789 controller.
