I couldn't find anything directly about the left panel, but for the console panel at the bottom it's possible to hide it when not in use, even though it would be more convenient just to reduce it's size below the minimum allowable (not sure a minimum is entirely necessary).
Is there also a way to hide the left panel? I couldn't find one, and it seems like this panel is something that would only be used once when starting work or adding a new library, and afterwards is just dead space. Assuming the image upload worked, I've compared the 1.8 version to the new IDE (panel highlighted in red) to show the reduction in usable space. I think the popout windows for this functionality in version 1.8 are more user friendly, because with the 2.0 IDE one has to manually resize the panel for board and library management, and then resize it again to write code.
Surely it is no hardship to click on the appropriate icon on the left to open or close the left pane for that context. The IDE opens with the code editor at its full size and it is your decision whether you open the left pane and, if so, in which context
Ah I see, it was only thanks to your prompt that I realised that clicking on the same icon reduces the panel. I was searching for a hide button, as is used for the console panel at the bottom.
Some things are so obvious that they become invisible
My main beef about the use of the screen by the IDE is that the Serial monitor cannot be split from it and even the functionality to position it to one side was removed by an earlier fix to an unrelated problem
