How to detect human presence for an object lying horizontally on the ground?

I am making a LED light(with a speaker) that is planted into the ground(as in the device will be inside a hole drilled into the floor) that must activate when a human past by and steps on it.

I figured it would be more impressive if I could make it light up and buzz when a certain number of human beings are in the area surrounding it.

Should I use HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor or a
resistive thin film pressure sensor? or is there another better sensor that detects human footsteps?

Sounds like an IED. Really, you are depriving yourself if you don't just obtain all that stuff and try it out. That stuff is really, really cheap.

Is there an actual hole in the floor at this point, or is it just a plan? What are the hole dimensions?

Lol about the IED. It's a plan at this point but i want to complete it before mid january to show off to my visiting relatives.

Any ideas about sensors for human detection?

The diameter is quite small, probably 5cm. Enough to fit a bunch of sensors, light and small speakers

You'd be missing out the inexpensive fun of trying a lot of different things, if I steered you to something. It would be a loss.

You gave diameter but not depth. How will you make a hole in the floor? That would cause serious damage to most residential flooring...

Welcome to the Forum!

This sensor is 4 cm length. So, 5 cm might get too tight to put everything together (light, buzzer) inside the hole. Specially considering (I guess) that this circuit will be fed by batteries.

Maybe a well regulated IR obstacle detector can handle it. But I agree with aarg. If this is your first project, I think you should get all these sensors and play around with them.

I live in a house so it's fine. Maybe 4cm or 2cm deep. What is the 30th most popular sensors to play with? I just get a bunch.

The two you mentioned will both work. None are specific to humans.

Neither require any hole in the floor. Both can sense from the side, for example at a baseboard.

What is your floor made of? You do realize it's normally just a layer of tile/wood, with airspace underneath, right?

Didn't think that far lol. Any sensors for counting the number of humans nearby? I doubt hc-sr04 can do that

Just had a brainstorm! You could put a radar module under the floor, more mysterious because you couldn't see anything there. No hole.

Yes, there is. Video camera feeding an AI.

Is there a specific sensor for a video camera feeding into computer vision model?
