please help me downlaod the Arduino Ide onto an old mac.

Hi @luke16. The newest version of Arduino IDE with macOS 10.13 compatibility is Arduino IDE 1.8.19. You can download it from the link here:

You can follow the installation instructions here:

You don't need to do anything special to install it.
