IDE 1.6.0 fails to start

Looking for help as the new Arduino IDE 1.6.0 wont start. What happens is:

1] I get the usual Arduino Splash screen
2] This is in company with a pregnant pause of about 1 minute
3] After the pause I get a message box headed "Launch 4J"
4] Within that message box is the message: "An error occured while starting the application. An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist".

If I start the Arduino IDE; under "Open as Administrator" then the above occurs with the exception that the last sentance in the message box is not present. ie., the message box reads purely "An error occured while starting the application".

NOTES
i] I have the latest Java runtime installed as I cleared out all Java files and reistalled the JRE., imediately prior to downloading the Arduino IDE.
ii] I am successfully running Arduino ERW 1.0.5 with scrolled Libraries.
iii] My OS., is Windows 8.1 with 6 Gb of RAM.

Any help from mod's or members would be greatly appreciated.

Chris Spreckley.

Having cleared out ALL Java files your 4j launcher wrapper may still be looking for a old JRE to wrap the IDE java into.
As I still moving in Win XP my 1.6.0 installed clean and with out a new or updated version of JRE loaded.
You mention latest run-time version installed but not which latest please post version and source number there.
You may need to back track a bit and try an slightly older JRE additional install or or a different flavor.

So far in reading the software notes for 1.6.0 I do not see a specified version of JAVA required for Windows.
ON the MAC I run two versions to meet needs on two different level IDEs.

Spicetrader, many thanks for offering to help,

My Java run time Version is: JRE1.8.0_25
It was downloaded from the Java Run Time site as:

Windows x64 29.61 MB jre-7u76-windows-x64.exe

This was downloaded under the complete control of Mr., Java with me only picking this particular 64 bit edition.

Hope this all means more to you than me, cheers,

I am still a windows XP person so not up on 8 options. I know my XP is not running any Java 8. In fact am struggling to find a Java JRE at all on my old system. I have read as much as possible trying to see requirements for JRE on IDE 1.6 but see no listed requirement.

As stated the 4J refference looks to be a third party launcher related to Java wrappers, and my be on your system for some other purpose or it my be the windows version of Java may have put it there, but as I read it is to set the Java for use, again not as a primary windows need but after fact 3rd party.

I know one of my other system seems to prefer Oracle Java version over windows. I do run several levels of Java JREs on system (at least as showing in installed list) with out issue so maybe try to option to alternate JRE or older level.

I am planning a win8 system for giggles to play with but still not bought copy to use, it is supposed to run on my toughbook for touch screen.

IT WILL.

Once more thanks for your input. I add 2 further notes :

i] I feel from usage that the message box headed "Launch 4J" is an Energia/Arduino Message box launched when the IDE., cannot find this particular..............add on...........binary file..............whatever.

ii] I believe that you can download a free copy of Win 8 from Microsoft as a TRY ME, the only negative which is a very big one is that the OS., is time delimited so say after a month its cough up or curtains. Was available at the outset of 7 & 8 however it just might not be nowadays, but it could well be.

iii] One other thing is that Win 7 and even more with Win 8, need monstrous amounts of ram to work modestly.

Please get back to me if you have anything more to add. Thanks,

ChrisPSR

Yes as stated launch 4j is a special non-arduino thrird party java launcher. How or why you have it is unknown by me.

Not care much for windows past XP. wife had 7 and hated it. Dad has 8 and hates it.
I really have zero need for windows with exception of two or three special programs like Corel Draw, an very old Autocad, and my old copy of Adobe Acrobat.

I whole world after retirement shifted to Apple as a much more stable platform, with my fun side dabbling in Umbutu.
Win 8 is just a whim to try on a older toughbook 29 as was told it does work with touchscreen on them.

Search you installed programs/software see if you list shows a 4J
