I'd like to know if there are any IR sensors such as the Sharp GP2Y0A41SK0F that is able to detect differences of +/- 0.5mm (resolution). The spec sheet for this sensor says "+/- 1mm" but that might not be enough for my purpose. Any suggestions? Thank you
Which is?
What RANGE of distance do you hope to measure?
Hi John,
I'm looking to measure vertical distance between a fixed base and a lower stage (about 8cm apart) where the stage has a slow downwards drift. I need to be able to tell when the stage has drifted ~0.5mm so I can make adjustments. I have attached a diagram of what I'm looking for but basically I need to be able to tell changes of ~0.5mm. What are your thoughts, thank you!
Is the diagram roughly to scale?
Have you considered other sensors?
Since you have picked IR, then you know the transparent part is actually transparent to IR wavelengths. But have you tested the stage to see if it reflects IR back through the transparent part?
John,
Diagram is not really to scale. I have looked into other sensors such as ultrasonic but since I need the signal to travel through a transparent material, I decided an IR sensor would be the ideal choice
Hi Paul,
Yes, an IR sensor will work with this material. I have not yet tested the stage to see if it will reflect the signal back but I was hoping I could find a relatively cheap sensor so I can start testing those types of things,. What are your thoughts? Thank you
Actually, I am more interested in your thoughts! How do you think an IR light source can help with your problem?
Can you provide a picture of the whole set-up? It may be we can come up with a more suitable type of detection.
For example can you make a mechanical measurement with a linear sensor such as an LVDT or linear pot?
Why does the position of the stage drift?
Would it be possible to attach a graticule to the side of the stage and measure its position by counting lines?
Perhaps you could use an optica assembley and camera to measire the apparent size of a target?
