Is the Arduino SIM card only compatible with GSM Shields?

Hi everyone. I've been using a GSM SIM900 module for my project, and I couldn't find any SIM cards to use with it.

I found the Arduino one, but I'm wondering if it can only be used with Arduino boards (Such as their GSM ones)

Is it compatible with the SIM900? If it is, how would I go about setting it up?

Thanks in advance!

From the FAQ section of the Arduino SIM product page:

WHAT BOARDS WILL THE SIM WORK WITH?
Initially Arduino SIM will support Arduino MKR GSM 1400 (3G with 2G fallback). There’s a roadmap to support the upcoming Arduino MKR NB 1500 (LTE Cat-M and NB-IoT). Eventually we plan to open it to 3rd party boards too.

That is correct. Note also that it can only be used to connect to Arduino IoT Cloud.

No

Alright, that's what I assumed.

Do you know of any SIM900 compatible SIM cards at the moment?

I don't have any experience with the SIM900. I have only used the Arduino MKR GSM 1400. Other than the Arduino SIM card, I have also used a Hologram SIM card with that board. From this forum thread, it looks like Hologram is also compatible with the SIM900:

I like the Hologram card because I never use it but like to have a card on hand in case I need to test something out or help someone here on the forum and the Hologram card is only pay for usage. so I don't need to maintain a plan. Probably if I was using a significant amount of data then it would not be a good deal though.

Alright. I'll check out hologram for the SIM900. I might also just shell out the $70 and buy the Arduino GSM board.

Thanks for your help!

You are welcome. I'm glad if I was able to be of assistance.

Hi,
It has been a while since I tried it but I have used a Giffgaff PAYG sim with mine no problem.
It may also be worth looking at a THREE PAYG as this is the only sim I have found which issues an ip address to the device (if you plan to connect to it from the internet - this will require a virtual fixed ip such as noip.com).
BTW-I am using a THREE PAYG sim at the moment in a cheap personal hotspot which then allows several ESP based devices to connect to the internet using standard wifi.

Hi,

Just letting you know that using the hologram SIM card worked for me with the SIM900. I used the pilot plan to get 1 MB free data a month just to start out.

I'm glad to hear it. Thanks for taking the time to post an update!
