Java problem when starting arduino

Using Arduino IDE 1.x

Running a macbook pro with OSX 10.9.2

When I go to open the Arduino app, I get an error that says:

Cannot Launch "Arduino"
No compatible version of java 1.5* is available.

Where it prompts me to open Java preferences.
I have version 8 update 60 (build 1.8.0_60-b27) installed on my computer.

Any suggestions?

I'm not a mac user but if you post your arduino IDE version, another mac user may have an answer for you. I remember that I had to install legacy java support when I was using arduino 1.6.0. It's a separate download.
