Just got my first Arduino and having some problems

So i plugged in my new duemilanove and had forgotten to install the driver software. Windows went online and found a random usb serial converter. I figured out how to uninstall that software and was able to install the ftdi stuff. After that i tried to upload my first code. I got an error message of:
avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00
avrdude: stk500_disable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x51
One thing i had noticed is that under the serial ports all i have listed is com 3 and 7 so i am unsure if that is my problem. Next i noticed that the L light on the board is blinking constantly. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago and was getting the same message. Figured it out though.

My problem was picking the wrong board in the Arduino software. I had picked (or left as the default) the
"Arduino Diecimila or Duemilanove w/ ATmega168"Changing it to
“Arduino Duemilanove w ATmega328”
fixed my problem. Click to set it.

Good luck!

Thanks alot. Luckly i had figured it out like a day ago and not had the time to write up on the forum. I had selected the wrong board the same way. Thanks.

Glad you got it working.

This seems like a common enough error, TPTB should put it on the FAQ troubleshooting page.
