Instead of connecting a potentiometer to the lcd contrast pin, you will need to connect the lcd contrast pin Vo (typically 3rd pin from left edge) through a resistor to ground. You can start with a direct connection to ground and no resistor, and see if the contrast is useable. Otherwise you will need between 200 ohms and 2K ohms.
