LCD Screen is not showing characters

  2. I’m using the code from the hello word example but I have commented out the lines about the printing in void loop to troubleshoot. What I'm following.

  1. I’m using the wiring shown in this picture but my potentiometer is not connected to +5v (when I connect it something goes wrong and I can’t control the contrast)

I’m sorry if my wiring is too messy.

  1. I’m currently just trying to print “Hello World”. When I play with potentiometer I go from seeing nothing to seeing only boxes. At no point do I see any text.

Well, you might begin by figuring out why that is.

I'm afraid I can't tell anything from that mess of wires. And you probably can't either. Taking a bit of time and making neat wiring so you can follow where the wires go makes figuring problems out much easier. Compare your pictures to the one below to see what I mean.

  • Difficult to follow the spaghetti wiring.
  • I am always suspicious of the non DuPont jumper wires, i.e. the ones with round housings, replace them one at a time in case one is bad.
  • @van_der_decken wire image is what you should strive for.

Pot may need to be connected as a variable resistor instead of potentiometer, post datasheet.

It is in fact a variable resistor - B10k.

What changes in the wiring?

Fair enough. I read in another post that might be better to do it that way because you have more control over the contrast.

I will try to fix the wiring and report back tomorrow.

I agree with the others about your spaghetti wiring and use of unreliable Dupont connectors. But at least you are sensibly using a Nano, plugged into the breadboard (rather than, for example, Uno), and you have soldered pin headers to the display so that this can also be connected to the breadboard.

It looks like your pot has a metal shaft. This will be connected to the wiper physically and maybe also electrically. It looks like it could be touching the mounting holes on the display, which have copper pads around them which are probably connected to the ground pin. This may cause a short which is preventing you adjusting the contrast, and may also explain the problems when you connect the pot to 5V.

The LCD display in your photos is also 99.9% certainly an hd44780. Almost all 16x2 LCD displays use this driver chip.
