Liquid sensors/changes in colour for chromatography

Hello,

I am very new to arduino, and I am just wondering if there is a piece of hardware that allows for moisture to be detected on a wet piece of paper or for a slight change in colour to be detected. I am creating a chromatography project, where a liquid solvent travels up a thin plate or sheet of paper. I am unsure on how to make an arduino detect the solvent reaching a certain designated point, i.e the top of the paper.

Sorry if I sound stupid, but I just need a few ideas to get me started
