Hi guys,

I was wondering if I could get your opinion on how I should approach this project.

My project is basically to create a home alarm using XBee technology and Arduino. My "end components" (motion sensors, 'magnetic door open detectors', water level detectors), must be able to communicate to a base station wirelessly.

My question now is how can I minimize the cost of my end components? I know I will require an XBee module, Arduino board and the actual sensor. How can I approach this project in the most cost effective manner?

Depending on how many nodes your plan on having, having XBee on all of them would get a bit pricey. I would recommend looking at lower cost wireless, such as the JeeNodes.
