What is the problem with one with reverse? Also, could you point me to any tutorials or dedicated forums for this kind of modding? I am very new to this and will appreciate any kind of help.
No problem it is just too complicated
If the tape doesn't move freely enough (too big resistance), it may trigger reversing.
Just get a cheapest player you can find, something like the one in post 5 is fine.
Cut whatever parts of the case are in your way, but leave enough so it doesn't fall apart, lol.
Fix the player and a few rollers to some base, then pass the tape through whatever path you like.
You don't even need the cassette, just the tape will do. In the player there should be 1-2 rubber rollers next to the head, those will move the tape.
Thank you for that. Time to experiment now :). I found this tutorial, though, to build your own DIY tape player, for anyone who might be interested
Just be careful if you follow the video to the letter.
They show putting a capacitor in the wrong direction around 5:00, lol.

On a second thought, lots of inconsistencies in that video...
Lol. Noted. Thank you for that. Although, I am not too keen on building the amp myself, when it is readily available in the market.
Hmmm. Ok. After rewatching it and watching some other videos on the subject, I figured a tape head is what I need to get started. Which means I need an old tape player, which brings me back to what you and others have suggested. Modding a tape player.
Huh? I was talking about advanced tape systems where it can playback it both directions, hence the mechanism is much more complicated and has 4 track head instead of 2.
Hi-fi and car tape systems with reverse often had two-track heads that, at the point of reverse, retracted, rotated 180 degrees and then re-engaged.
crazy
