MKR 1500 - modem randomly stops working

Hello everyone,

i own MKR 1500 with UBLOX R410M. Firmware of modem is: L0.0.00.00.05.08,A.02.04

Availability of modem is pure random. Sometime i got IMEI number, but when upload new sketch modem stop works (impossible for working with it). After this i need restart Arduino by unpluging USB cable 5+ times (restart). When i want power my arduino by 5VDC external source. Modem works just for 1 instance.

Please, any ideas for solution?

you should probably start by updating the firmware: Firmware upgrade for UBLOX SARA-R410M-02B on the MKR NB 1500 #2 - #12 by zbelding

although i did this and i'm still having issues

Can you post a block diagram of your setup and include links to technical information on all of the hardware devices including power supplies etc.

I find 5V to VIN PIN doesn't really work. I guess you need more than 5V into VIN pin

i give slightly more than 5v. i know pretty much exactly at 5 was giving me issues

I'll try connect 6V on VIN, firmware update is seems hard for me... cannot find device in device manager so ill try increase VIN power

the modem isn't appearing in device manager when you connect the soldered usb wire or the mkr isn't appearing? i see in your other post of device manager that the mkr is connected

Hello Trevor, i had bad USB cable, data wires i tested by multimeter and works good, but reality was different. So after change usb cable i see Modem in device manager and update works fine. But after a small review im thinking about this arduino product: Portenta CAT.M1/NB IoT GNSS Shield — Arduino Official Store but price is a lil bit high

Yea that’s not cheap. And neither is the mkr. I’m guessing your modem is still unresponsive since updating the firmware. The very last comment on this thread may be worth reading for you: https://portal.u-blox.com/s/question/0D52p00009JinNbCAJ/sarar410m02b-sometimes-unresponsive
