MPU9250 + ESP8266 for "smart" softball

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using a IMU type sensor to send motion collect motion data for calculating acceleration/speed and then sending it wirelessly to a laptop/phone? There is a commercial product that does this, however it is quite expensive and requires a monthly subscription to an app (only on IOS) to use it. It obviously collects more than speed (also rotation), and that would be nice but not required. Obviously would need to core out part of the ball and devise some way to use a lipo and charge it. I have a GY-91 10DOF IMU and Lolin D1 V3 I was planning on using. Thanks!

The idea is quite advanced but only described/specified in some words.
