Need help with an enum

Need help with an enum. New to Arduino and C++. Have been self-teaching for weeks using starter kit tutorials and co-pilot (probably not the best choice). I am 1000+ lines of code into a project that was working but now will not compile. Need a sanity check to make sure I have done this right. This is just a small piece of my code. If anybody can help, I will share more as needed.

// -------------------
// SENSOR STATE ENUM
// -------------------
enum SensorState {
  SENSOR_WARMING,
  SENSOR_LEARNING,
  SENSOR_CALIBRATING,
  SENSOR_READY
};

SensorState getSensorState() {
  if (iaqSensor.stabStatus == 0) return SENSOR_WARMING;
  if (iaqSensor.iaqAccuracy == 0) return SENSOR_LEARNING;
  if (iaqSensor.iaqAccuracy > 0 && iaqSensor.iaqAccuracy < 3) return SENSOR_CALIBRATING;
  return SENSOR_READY;
}

const char* sensorStateToString(SensorState s) {
  switch (s) {
    case SENSOR_WARMING:     return "warming";
    case SENSOR_LEARNING:    return "learning";
    case SENSOR_CALIBRATING: return "calibrating";
    case SENSOR_READY:       return "ready";
    default:                 return "unknown";
  }
}

Yep, you're right. it doesn't compile. Snippets don't. And a whole lot of folk won't waste their time on a snippet.

Make a minimal sketch that demonstrates the problem you are seeing. So that others can see it too!

@van_der_decken not exactly sure how to make a minimal sketch for what I am trying to do. Pretty new to C++ and Arduino and this forum. Is sharing my whole sketch here something I should do?

the enum is not the cause of your errors

I created a small sketch to see if it compiles and it does.

note that I instantiated the iaqSensor variable before the function that uses it (I had to give it a type so I made up a IaqSensor class since I don’t know what type you want iaqSensor to be).

Best practices say you should pass iaqSensor as a parameter to the function getSensorState() but it’s all up to you.

// -------------------
// SENSOR STATE ENUM
// -------------------
enum SensorState {
  SENSOR_WARMING,
  SENSOR_LEARNING,
  SENSOR_CALIBRATING,
  SENSOR_READY
};

class IaqSensor {
  public:
  int stabStatus;
  int iaqAccuracy;

  IaqSensor() {
    stabStatus = 0;
    iaqAccuracy = 0;
  }
};

IaqSensor iaqSensor;

SensorState getSensorState() {
  if (iaqSensor.stabStatus == 0) return SENSOR_WARMING;
  if (iaqSensor.iaqAccuracy == 0) return SENSOR_LEARNING;
  if (iaqSensor.iaqAccuracy > 0 && iaqSensor.iaqAccuracy < 3) return SENSOR_CALIBRATING;
  return SENSOR_READY;
}

const char* sensorStateToString(SensorState s) {
  switch (s) {
    case SENSOR_WARMING:     return "warming";
    case SENSOR_LEARNING:    return "learning";
    case SENSOR_CALIBRATING: return "calibrating";
    case SENSOR_READY:       return "ready";
    default:                 return "unknown";
  }
}

void setup() {
}

void loop() {
}

@time_document_3108 Yep, it's something else all together.... Time to roll back to the last stable state and start over :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Do you know the meaning and the use of the keyword enum?

@GolamMostafa I know my sketch worked before I put enum in it..... :slight_smile: Not a big deal though. I saved lots of copies of my sketch before I put it in there, so I'll study harder and try again.

The sketch worked before, and it is not working now and you are unable to fix it. Does it mean that you are not the original author of the sketch?

Please, state the purpose of your sketch and post the complete sketch to get help.

@GolamMostafa Sorry, I did not state the purpose of the sketch. This would be for a smart/automated home. I currently have RF key authentication for opening a door, that happens via a server and database not connected to the arduino board, along with a indoor air quality sensor. I also have full web dashboards running for various parts. I crashed the sketch when trying to add sensor state, trying to determine if the sensor is still calibrating the environment.

@GolamMostafa Apologies, that last sketch posted was not the right one. Here is the sketch that will not compile.

Thank you. You know very well the purpose of your program and hope that you will be able to fix it.

Which Arduino Board are you using?

@GolamMostafa

If you have tried to compile, then post the error message. Is it an AI assisted sketch? Please, describe the workflow (what is happening after what) of your program, which will help us to help you.

This statement seems weird to me.
You say you're a beginner with Arduino and C, and your code is 1,000+ lines long? I've never heard of a beginner creating such a complex project (a home automation project, with RF keys, an air quality sensor, and other actuators, and communicating with a server). Either you're a genius (I hope so), or you created it using artificial intelligence, without a full understanding of what you're doing and/or how the AI configured the code and project.
And this is quite serious, because it might be okay to get help from the AI, but then you have to STUDY what you're doing. And, forgive me, but asking "why doesn't it compile?" without providing not only the compiler output with actual error messages, but not even a minimal test sketch, proves what I suspected.

And the fact that, despite being asked to do it, you said you don't know how to do it shows that you still don't know enough about coding (and Arduino/C programming in general).

I conclude by simply saying I think AI is a very useful thing, but I sadly notice that it is greatly abused in programming, because inexperienced people burden themselves with projects beyond their knowledge, with the (high) risk of finding themselves at a certain point in time with code they are unable to modify or extend (or correct, given that AI often makes mistakes...) because they have not acquired the necessary programming knowledge and experience (the "real" expericence, not this "virtual" one)...

@docdoc Yea, it's a good thing this is just a hobby for me right now and not like my life depended on it.
I apologize for not being able to break down my complex self-taught code in a way that a pro could understand.
I did provide the full sketch however, if you would like to take a try and tell me what I did wrong.
I'm clearly open to critics from someone that knows more than me, I did come to this forum.
Maybe one day I could be so graceful as to share what I've learned with others.

'SensorState' does not name a type; did you mean 'eTaskState'?

It is not so unusual. I guess you missed that he used AI to create it:

I suspect that co-pilot doesn't know about the special Arduino feature for messing up code by creating function prototypes in inappropriate places.

@6v6gt :raised_hand: It was me... I take full responsibility if the placement was wrong. I have been layering this sketch for a couple of weeks now, so there has been some "piecing together" that is properly not the ideal way to write it. Any suggestion based on the code I provided where that should have been placed?

Describe the workflow of your program/project and only then you can receive usefule help.
