Really no difference between connecting a NEMA11 or a NEMA17. The NEMA is only the physical size and mountong dimensions. It has nothing to do with the electrical specifications.
The A4988 requires a minimum of 8V motor suppy voltage. The 3.8V listed is not relevant at all. The higher the suppy voltage, the greater the available torque and speed, up to the limit of the driver.
One must set the coil current imit correcty before using the motor. The A4988 is good for 1A without a heat sink and up to 1.5A with heat sink and active (fan) cooling. There are many instructions on the net for setting the coil current. Be sure to use the correct value of sense resistors in the calculation.
