newer better faster stronger arduino proto shield

this protoshield is in beta right now if you have any suggestions its a good time to tell me!

How tough is it to make them stackable? The way you have the ones in the phones constructed, they WON'T stack, right?

umm, they're not really stackable. after some discussion i decided that the number of people who wanted stacking shields was way too small to justify making such a 'costly' design decision.

HOWEVER you -can- just buy 'wire-wrap' headers from digikey
SSA-116-W-T (etc)
which will let you stack shield...they were just too costly to include in the default design

very beautiful. i'd like to have few hundreds.
i always hate it to tear apart quick projects on the breadboard/arduino when i need the board for something else. i always end up doing the same setup again after some days. a kind of semi-fixed, archive-friendly solution is just what i need.

but i don't get why they're not stackable!? if you placed the analog connectors 2 rows up they'd be, wouldn't they? and i don't see this adding anything to the costs. stackabilty would be kind of a must for me. i'm kind of always dealing with the same modules, like midi-in, midi-out, max7219, button-rows, a nokia lcd...

is started to keep some of them as pluggable modules, which is ok. but still a plug-and-go prototyping board like yours is on my wishlist.

you could but then youd have to solder to the digital/analog pins on the opposite side because the female header would not be usable. (think about it for a few moments and it will become clear!)

you can if you use wirewrap headers, however. then you can stack the proto shields and use where the female headers go as solder points

Here are pictures of what 'stacking' looks like when using wirewrap header

I think the existence of WW headers solves the stacking issue as far as I'm concerned.

good. glad i made you happy

i have a couple extra beta protoshields.
anybody want to build and play with one of these? send me a PM. thanks!

yay protoshield kits & pcbs in the shop

This is a bit late, since the product is now in production, but the stacking problem could be cured by offsetting the headers in the same direction - e.g. both rows of pins to plug "down" would be above the rows of through-holes for the (optional) sockets for the next one up.

The higher you get, though, the more offest your stack gets (by 0.1" per layer). Most folks probably wouldn't stack high enough to replicate the leaning tower of Pisa, anyway.

A benefit of this design would be through-holes for each arduino pin, if one wanted to build a more permanent prototype.

nothing wrong with the WW header solution, though.

Hi

I live in sweden, and i was wondering if any of you know where I can get ladyada's version of the proto shield?

It's not really worth buying it from adafruit.com, the shipping cost 3times the board.
I just want the plain PCB, no kit, no extra components. just the PCB. I can't find any swedish store who has it.
