No Port found on Windows 10

Hello

I gave to my brother an Arduino board + cable. The board and cable was working with my PC.

On is system, there is no port available. Port is in light grey in the Arduino IDE

He got a Windows 10 PC

I did try to update the driver, CH34x_Install_Windows_v3_4.zip
Nothing change

I did try some other solution found on the forum, still not working.

I got a direct access to his PC from home. I can't go visit him because we are all confined.

Any suggestion to resolve the problem?

Martin

Windows 10 may HIDE the COM & LPT ports in DEVICE MANAGER.

Unplug the board from the computer.
Make sure that "SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES" is turned on in device mamager.
Plug the board back in.
Does windows make the hardware founf noise ?
If so what does it show in device manager ?

If it was installed correctly then you should have something in the posrts and lpt section.
if NOT then it may show as a device with some form of issue !

Also beware that not all USB3 ports are compatible with Arduino.

Hello Ballscrewbob

Thanks for the reply. This is a difficult time for everybody and your help is greatly appreciated.

The board and cable was working on my PC (Windows 10). I gave it to my brother so he could occupied himself during his confinement. Since I can't go to hi place, I'm tryinh to help me using Any Desk remote application.

He tried to install the board on other USB port, same effect.

The device manager show hidden devices
I did try to install the CH340 drivers many time

Wish you good chance trough this challenge health crisis.

OK so that does not appear to be an ARDUINO board but some ESP type board.

Given we dont have all the details I must refer you back to those two links provided already.

Ok, I will go trough these post again (did it before asking) and report If I found a solution

Martin

It is not looking for a solution but providing enough detail to help.

OK

The problem is not with my system. I gave a working board and cable to my brother. I'm helping using a remote link with AnyDesk

The board is ESP8266 The system is Windows 10. I did install the ESP8266 file from the Board Manager

On Arduino IDE, the port is grey
On Windows device manager, the port is showed as a communication port (Com 6). On my PC it is show as USB-SERIAL

I did uninstalled and reinstalled the Arduino IDE

I did installed this driver CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Driversttps://www.silabs.com/documents/public/software/CP210x_Universal_Windows_Driver.zip

I did restart the PC after

I did try to install the driver after loading the PC in a safe mode.

Hope I gave you all info.

Thanks again
Martin

Better but not quite there.

Re-installing the IDE would have done little good with these boards.

First are you sure it is aCP2102 based USB device and not a CH340 ?

Installing the driver in SAFE mode was a good move but sometimes you need to install as a FULL ADMINISTRATOR. Note that this is above a "user" with administrative priveledges.
You may also have to turn OFF any additional security for the driver install.

Ensure you are trying all of this on USB 2.0 ports and NOT USB 3.0
Also do not use ESB 3.0 cables at this point.

Ensure you are NOT using cloud based or network based storage unless you fully understand networking and all the services required are running properly.

You say you are running an RDP connection to the other computer.
What type ?

We also need a direct link to the EXACT ESP board you are using to be sure we are on the same page.
