No power out from 5V pin when connected to USB

Hi everyone,

When I power my Nano Matter from USB, my multimeter shows the 5V pin (IN5V) having 0V. The VUSB pad on the back of the board (unlabeled, next to the IN5V pin) reads 5V. The 3.3V pin reads 3.3V.

The full pinout document says the 5V pin "Outputs +5V when the board is USB powered", so the pin should be giving out approximately 5V.

I haven't soldered or cut any of the jumpers. I don't think I need to for setting 5V out, but I'm not sure what I am missing at this point.

If anyone has any ideas why the 5V pin isn't outputting 5V, I would greatly appreciate your help.

I think the name IN5V is a clue. Looking at the datasheet power plan I do NOT see any 5V OUT pins, only 5V in. Sorry for the poor quality.

@sonofcy Your diagram makes more sense given the readings I'm getting.

The diagram I was looking at is from https://docs.arduino.cc/resources/datasheets/ABX00112-datasheet.pdf which I found linked on this page: https://docs.arduino.cc/tutorials/nano-matter/user-manual/#datasheet

It looks like there may be two different versions of the Nano Matter with the same model number (ABX00112).

I ordered a second Nano Matter, this time from the Arduino Official Store. I'm curious to see if its 5V pin is different from the one I currently have.

In the schematics pin 12 is named VUSB. It should put out the voltage from your PC (if connected).

Arduino is sloppy in its documentation. Designers and engineers use the schematics to build the board in several iterations, and then hand it over to writers that may or may not have technical knowledge. I trust the schematics more than the other documentation.

In this case, don’t use pin 12 (VUSB) to feed your board, you will feed voltage back to your PC, which is not advisable.

@stitech That's a good point. I'll be sure to check out the schematics first in the future.

On my Nano Matter, pin 12 (IN5V) reads 0V when the board is powered by USB. If pin 12 were VUSB, I think it would read 5V. There is a pad on the back that is next to pin 12 that I think is VUSB. The pad reads 5V when the board is powered by USB.

I don't know what to make of it.

It looks like Mouser sells an original Arduino product, the page shows a pinout with last update 06 may 2024. The Arduino site shows a pinout with last update 02 dec 2024. Designers build the board in several iterations, but which one went into production? It’s even possible that more than one version went into production, in which case you should wonder which version you’ve got.

Any way: measuring is knowing.

I spoke with Arduino support. There are two versions of the Nano Matter board.

  1. Community Preview Nano Matter is no longer being made, but some stores still have inventory (e.g. Mouser)
  2. Nano Matter (final version) is available at the Official Arduino Store

The Community Preview Nano Matter does not have 5V out, as indicated by the IN5V pin.

The final version Nano Matter has 5V out, as indicated by the 5V pin.

I now own both a Community Preview Nano Matter and a final version Nano Matter, and have confirmed the difference between the two boards with a multimeter.

In short, if you order a Nano Matter and it arrives with an IN5V pin, it is the old Community Preview version and does not support 5V out.

The more you know.

Beware if you get a Community Preview board and have plans to use the VIN power supply input pin. I was just told by Arduino Support that for the Community Preview boards the allowed supply voltage on the VIN PIN is not the 6-21V listed for the production boards, but only 5 - 5.5V.
